HELP - Lesson 2 Page 3

More formatting

We have used the <B> tag to make text bold. Try <U> to underline your text, and <I> to make the text italic but this time, lets type it in.

Press the < key to start the opening tag then start to type the name of the tag you need to insert - and watch what happens - as soon as you type a letter you should see a suggestion for the tag you intend to enter - if its not the right tag, then carry on typing a second letter. You can select the whole word by pressing the TAB key (usually to the left of the letter Q on a western keyboard).

So try this - press the U key to jump straight to the Underline tag, and then press the > key to close the tag.

Did a closing tag appear automatically? This is an option which you can turn off if you don't like it, but why not leave it for now - after all we have learnt that every opening tag requires a closing tag, so this is a great way to save typing and also to keep within the rules at the same time. On the other hand this can be turned off if you would rather not work this way, in Tools | Options.

Do you notice a similarity to using a word processor? Turn bold on, then type, then turn bold off - or highlight a word and click the bold icon.... - thats because we try to do things in a familiar way.

Exercise

Add the word UNDERLINED and make it underlined.

Add the word BOLD and make it bold

Add the world BOLD UNDERLINED and make them bold and underlined.

In the above example we use two tags together. Keep them in order - open the bold tag, open the underline tag, add the text, close the underline tag and finally close the bold tag. Using Auto complete, these closing tags will of course be done for you already.

Lets find out how to position these words next...
